Earlier this week, Lennar announced a new homebuilding approach that embraces Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Home Design™ to enable seamless voice control, shopping and home automation. In this recent Digital Trends, Lulu Chang describes what this means for new home buyers looking for a truly smart home.

The “smart” in smart homes comes as an afterthought — it’s not the home itself that’s intelligent. Rather, it’s the devices and appliances in it. A few companies are designing and building homes to have such devices working together from the start, including homebuilding company Lennar . On Wednesday, it launched the first Wi-Fi-certified smart home designs alongside Amazon Alexa. You can buy a home designed with voice control, shopping, and home automation in mind, giving the notion of a smart home a brand new meaning.

The builder has become the first to adopt the Wi-Fi Certified Home Design program from Wi-Fi Alliance, the global network of companies that works for the adoption of Wi-Fi globally, according to a company press release. So what does that mean for you? In essence, you’ll be able to control your lights, lock your front door, and set your thermostat by chatting with Alexa. And your home will be built with all those capabilities in mind. Samsung SmartThings hubs, Honeywell thermostats, Ring video doorbells, Lutron lights, smart locks from Baldwin or Kwikset, and Sonos speakers are all potential devices that could come with the home when someone buys it.

“We’re very excited to work with Lennar to integrate Alexa into their Wi-Fi Certified Home Design program,” said Daniel Rausch, vice president of Alexa Smart Home for Amazon. “We’ve seen tremendous interest from our Alexa customers in controlling more aspects of their smart home through Alexa, and Lennar makes that easier for customers by seamlessly integrating devices that Work with Amazon Alexa into their Wi-Fi Certified home designs.”

Lennar is the world’s first builder to introduce a Wi-Fi CERTIFIED home designed for the future, and Ring, the leader in home security and a community-focused company, was a natural fit for these cutting-edge homes. With over one million customers and more than three billion Doorbell alerts, Ring is at the forefront of the new wave of home security, putting the power of protection into the hands of homeowners and preventing neighborhood crime from taking place.

Ring is always seeking and innovating new ways to connect with local communities and empower them with proactive home security. For example, we donated Ring Doorbells to nearby Wilshire Park in Los Angeles, work closely with police stations around the U.S. to educate and engage with homeowners, and recently launched a campaign with Shaquille O’Neal to donate $1 million of Ring devices to neighborhoods across the country. This partnership with Lennar is the latest expansion of Ring’s mission.

Homeowners in Lennar’s Wi-Fi CERTIFIED homes benefit from leading technologies and cutting-edge integrations, like Amazon Alexa voice control and the premium Ring Video Doorbell Elite.

The first power-over-ethernet product of its kind, Ring Elite is installed by professionals – like Lennar tradespeople – in a junction box, so it lays flush with a home’s exterior. This device enables users to monitor their property from anywhere, so they can greet friends and neighbors, communicate with mailmen, ward off strangers and keep an eye on the kids in the front yard – all via the Ring mobile app.

With every home boasting Ring devices, Lennar’s new Wi-Fi CERTIFIED communities will offer residents an unmatched ability to keep tabs on what’s happening in their neighborhoods.

Internet-connected products play an increasingly important role in our lives, so ensuring those products work seamlessly on their own and integrate with other devices is crucial. Not only will these new Lennar Wi-Fi CERTIFIED homes help make life more fun and convenient, with Ring, they can also bring homeowners added peace of mind.
