Summer has officially started, which means it’s prime time to utilize and entertain in your lush outdoor space. If it’s not already in use, get out your grilling gear and show off those backyard projects you’ve been working on–time to host a backyard barbecue. So, whether it’s a birthday party, special celebration, or just a regular weekend bash you’re hosting this summer, make sure you do so in style. Consider one of these rocking themes to host a simple and fun backyard bash.

Baseball Bash

A baseball-themed backyard barbeque is a great way to celebrate a birthday, the big game, or any other barbecue worthy occasion. To have the best baseball-themed backyard bash, make sure you invest in plenty of American classics, like hot dogs, hamburgers, and apple pie. Grilling is a must for this celebration, so no matter what tasty treats you choose to serve, make sure you center the party around the grill master.

To decorate, add a few baseballs or mitts to a red-checkered table. Toss some ballpark style baskets on the table, and toss a few balls out on the lawn so that the kids can play a game of catch while the older folks finish eating.

Patriotic

Red, white, and blue!
Red, white, and blue!

For a patriotic party, consider decorating and styling your menu in simple reds, whites, and blues. Snow cones, popsicles, and fresh fruit salad are a must for using patriotic colors in your food selection.

Adorn your tables with simple, flag-themed tablecloths and bouquets of red, white, and blue stems–roses, hydrangeas, and tulips–although the opportunities are truly endless. Be sure there are plenty of sparklers to go around, and rock those American anthems all night long.

Rustic

A rustic backyard celebration is a great way to celebrate a birthday, wedding, or even an anniversary. There are so many ways you can spin this classic theme, including as a barnyard, woodland, or campsite style party, but the one thing they all have in common? They’re sure to be a lot of fun.

The key element to throwing the best rustic party is incorporating multiple elements of nature. Use hay bales, logs, wood slices, burlap, and wooden pallets whenever possible, and use simple ingredients in all of your cooking. Corn on the cob, brisket, and fresh fruit make great menu items for this style of party. Once you have the bonfire going, you can also grill up plenty of s’mores to keep the kids, and kids at heart, content.

Rustic celebrations are great for pulling the mason jar collection out of the attic. You can use these handy glasses as drinking cups, serving containers, and more. Make sure there are plenty of lawn chairs to go around, and be sure to set up some fun, outdoorsy lawn games to keep everyone entertained.

Fiesta

Chips, dips and cold drinks

A South of the Border inspired party is excellent for celebrating Cinco de Mayo–or any lively celebration. Turn up the heat with spicy dishes like seven layer dip, grilled tacos, and even campfire quesadillas.

Be sure to prepare several pitchers of margaritas and advance, and keep the kids entertained with classic pinatas and other fun yard games. Decorate in bright, natural colors, and be sure to get the stereo going with some festive, upbeat tunes.

Beach

You don’t have to live near the ocean in order to host an awesome backyard beach barbeque. For this party, decorate in shades of blue, green, and white, and make sure there are plenty of aquatic activities available for kids of all ages. Slip ‘n Slides, sprinklers, and splash pools are easy to set up on any lawn, but if you don’t have the time or space, consider filling a few buckets of water balloons and arming each attendee with a squirt gun.

For food, serve watermelon on a stick to keep everyone adequately hydrated, or decorate cookies with blue and white frosting. Use mini sand pails and shovels as silverware and holders, and don’t forget to set up a sandbox so that everyone gets a chance to build a sandcastle!

This list is far from comprehensive of the best backyard party themes, but it should get you started this summer as you plan the backyard barbeque of your dreams.

Can new homes meet the needs of multigenerational families and offer connectivity features each household member can enjoy? In this recent BUILDER article, Mary Cook describes how new home builders are accommodating the needs of multigenerational families while providing the latest in smart home technology. Lennar’s Next Gen® – The Home Within a Home offers innovative floorplans to accommodate families without sacrificing comfort, and with Everything’s Included®, the most desirable technology brand devices, all of which are included with your new home at an outstanding value.

Today, a simple clap or single word can bring electronics to life. It’s helpful for all, but a true luxury for those with kids underfoot, a hectic schedule, or disabilities. This type of convenience is a “poster child” for two trends that are upending American housing: smart technology and the multigenerational home.

These two trends are driving interrelated societal change. And they are unlikely to wane soon since they can save time, money and make life easier. In fact, smart technology is taking over our homes—homes that are increasingly multi-generational.

Smart-tech products once were mainly for the affluent—or those on the cutting edge. But cheaper sensors are fueling the age of smart everything, notes TechCrunch.com. And as prices drop, homes are being outfitted from the ground up with an array of smart tech products that can handle myriad tasks, from filling a bathtub to programming a thermostat.

Today’s smart tech is also getting smarter. A case in point is the refrigerator that learns a family’s habits and orders groceries. It is also a selling point; 94% of buyers are so smitten with tech-rich applications they would sacrifice for them 1,000 square feet of living space, notes Realty Times.

Ironically, the square footage of our homes is not necessarily growing by leaps and bounds, yet multigenerational households are on the rise. By definition, the term refers to households with two or more adult generations or grandparents and grandchildren, and one-fifth of all families—almost 61 million Americans— have multiple generations living under the same roof, notes a 2016 Pew Research Center analysis of Census data.

Growing racial and ethnic diversity explains some of the rise in multigenerational living, reports Pew, as those groups are more likely than whites to live in multigenerational homes. That means smart tech will come in handier than ever in busy households with multiple needs.

The numbers are spurring builders and developers to meet this need in creative, flexible ways. But to create spaces that let all residents in a home make the most of today—and tomorrow’s—cutting edge smart tech, architects, developers and builders must marry these two trends seamlessly in the spaces they create.

Thanks to our work designing model home interiors, amenities and hospitality spaces nationally, we know which smart-tech products work best for each generation. We are also adept at designing interiors with an optimal balance between private and shared space to help multiple generations live together harmoniously.

So, how do design professionals blend these two trends? It’s critical to design homes that will meet each generation’s diverse needs, yet allow them to make maximum use of the latest and greatest the smart tech trend has to offer. Here are three ways to accomplish these goals:

Millennials don’t all share the same homebuying preferences. As described in this recent Forbes article by Andrew Arnold, older millennials have embraced smart home technology while the younger of the group tend to be more focused on lowering mortgage payments that may contend with student loans and other debt. Thankfully, with Lennar’s Everything’s Included®, new home buyers don’t have to sacrifice connectivity for value.  The Connected Home by Lennar is the first Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ Home Design that keeps you connected to the most desirable technology brand devices, all of which are included with your new home at an outstanding value.

One thing we also know about millennials is that they are very mindful of environmental sustainability. They tend to do business with companies that are also mindful of the environment. So, it seems logical that they would look for homes that are – or at least re-configure homes they buy to be – “smart,” with the IoT devices that allow them to save energy and provide more convenience. Smart homes allow them to control heating and cooling, lights, and a myriad of small home appliances remotely.

The older segment of this generation (aged 27-36) seems “sold” on smart home concepts. In fact, 38% of them already have purchased homes that are “smart” or have installed the technology. And of those remaining, 58% are interested in doing this.

The younger contingent does not seem as interested in doing so. There may be several reasons for this. One, this younger segment appears to be very security conscious and is concerned about the risks involved in IoT devices in their homes. They worry about privacy.

There is also the cost factor – configuring a smart home can be pricey.

The other key factor in home buying for the younger segment of this generation is mortgage cost and payments. These young people are closer to the college loan payment issue than their older cohorts. They are not looking for smart homes as much as they are looking for the most favorable lending environments.

Another reason seems to be that they are far more interested in creating a healthy home environment than a “smart” one. They want sustainable and all natural furnishings; they want construction materials without chemicals; they want LED lighting technology; they want energy-efficient windows. They don’t seem to want to be “cool” and “trendy” as the older segment does.

Where does this leave the future of smart homes?

Smart homes are not going away. And as the technology improves, along with security innovations to provide greater security and privacy, they will prove to be a valuable resource for all consumers who are looking to be environmentally conscious and to lower the costs of their utility bills. In fact, a recent survey indicated that 72% of millennials would be willing to pay $1,500 more for a home that was “smart,” and 42% of those would be willing to pay as much as $3,000 more.

Smart home technology is only improving, and there certainly are exciting innovations and challenges for the future. These will attract more and more millennials who thus far have not invested in smart home technology.
