Prioritizing simplicity and functionality, minimalism in home décor grows daily in popularity. In a minimalist home, the interplay between light, space, and objects creates a balanced, organized, and calming atmosphere. Clutter is to be avoided at all costs, accents are few and carefully chosen, and the color palette is soft, favoring soothing colors.

As attractive as this style can be, the question of whether it’s right for you and your family requires careful consideration. Below are three questions to weigh before reaching a decision, as well as tips for creating a hybrid which may better accommodate your needs.

What style of décor do you most favor?

The saying “different strokes for different folks” applies as surely to your decorating style as to anything else. While you may greatly appreciate the minimalist aesthetic, for day-to-day living a homier, more lived-in look–incorporating lots of decorative pillows, cozy throw rugs, and family photos—could be your preference. Alternately, for example, you may love furniture and accessories that make a dramatic statement, incorporating bold colors and vibrant patterns.

If you’re unsure about the style that you like best, decorating-focused magazines and books are a great source of inspiration! The good news is that Lennar homes lend themselves to many types of décor, and our New Home Consultants can help you choose paint and cabinet colors, as well as flooring that captures your style.

Are you neat and organized, or more organic and relaxed?

“Stuff” is minimalism’s nemesis and for this style to work, the home must be very orderly and uncluttered. Because minimalism requires paring down on furnishings and accents, and its beauty hinges on clean lines and empty space, extraneous elements should be few and far between.

Before committing to this décor, ask yourself if it will feel comfortable and natural given your personality. If constant house-keeping isn’t your top priority, you may want to evaluate if and how you implement minimalism in your home. Regardless of your decision, you’ll find that Lennar homes are designed to provide you with plenty of storage areas, closets, and cabinets where things can readily be stashed.

Does minimalism fit your family?

Even if you love the style and are a highly organized individual, you must consider your family. Are there young ones who would wreak havoc with your light-colored furnishings? Do they have the run of the home — scattering toys in their wake — or do they have a dedicated space for playtime?

Teenagers can also be a challenge in a minimalist home, as some tend to leave their marks everywhere: dirty dishes on the kitchen counter; empty soda cans here and there; miscellaneous belongings flung about. Consider whether attempting to have a minimalist home could create frustration and conflict, rather than the peaceful nirvana every home should be.

If you love the decor, even if it doesn’t exactly fit your family, not all is lost! Many Lennar homes have a formal living room, in addition to a family room. You could choose to incorporate minimalism in the living room and declare it off limits for daily living. The master bedroom might also be a good canvas for this décor as a haven to escape to at day’s end, while the rest of the home offers a more kid-friendly style.

Another idea that could work for your family, involves easing into minimalism, gradually paring back on accessories and accents as you all adjust. In the process you may hit on just the right level of minimalism for you: perhaps one that is a happy compromise and offers the balance you need to be comfortable! As you decide what is best for you, we are here to help you find the perfect home, bringing your decorating vision to life in 2019! Happy New Year to you and yours!

If our homes could talk, they might offer a few ideas for resolutions they’d like us to keep. Disposing of things we don’t often use, better organizing those we do, and further beautifying/updating your space, would probably figure at the top of every home’s wish list! Here are some easy tips that will have you—and your home!—feeling good in 2019.

1. De-clutter

Many of us have a tendency to hold on to things we don’t really need or even use. Like Little Johnny’s first pull truck that has been parked in his toy cabinet for the last five years. Or the ornate china set from Great-Aunt Mildred which unfortunately clashes with your beachy vibe. And the ample storage space found in Lennar homes—including walk-in closets and plentiful cabinets—makes it easy to stash all kinds of things.

Now, as we start 2019, is the time to take inventory of belongings that somebody else could be enjoying. Those toys, books, and clothes your children have outgrown may be treasure for another family. With no shortage of excellent local charities, some which will even pick up bulky items such as furniture, finding a worthy recipient for your items is easy. Conversely, you could consider having a garage sale, involving the kids in the fun of setting up their wares and making a little extra pocket money.

Whatever you decide to do—whether it be giving away or selling those things—you’ll feel better about your reclaimed space, as well as knowing somebody is benefitting from your actions.

2. Organize

Having bid farewell to clutter, it’s time to organize your belongings. Avoid becoming overwhelmed by breaking up the task into a series of manageable steps and focusing on one room per week. Involve the family, make things fun, offering hot chocolate and favorite snacks while playing music you all enjoy.

It makes sense to begin with the kitchen, the central hub where everybody congregates. Most Lennar homes offer pantries, the perfect space to store your extra items. We find it useful to devote one shelf to paper goods, such as paper towels, toilet paper, and tissue; another to cans and non-refrigerated foods; and another to cleaning products. Other helpful pointers for organizing your kitchen cabinets:

As you take on other rooms, the above guidelines generally apply. Make children’s safety a top priority and use organizers to maximize use of your large Lennar closets. Shoe organizers can be particularly beneficial, keeping pairs together and looking neat. And for kids, toy chests are wonderful solutions, enabling easy pick up and stashing.

It may take a few weeks to get every room in your house organized to your liking, but you will soon have the considerable satisfaction of seeing everything in your home find its perfect place.

3. Freshen the Look

If you recently purchased your Lennar home, you were given a choice of the latest designer paint colors for your walls and cabinets, and the most updated appointments for your home. For the rest of us, freshening our decor is a great home resolution! As paint companies announce their colors of the year for 2019, we are seeing thoughtful hues that range from soft terracotta’s to misty blues and organic greens. Take a trip to your favorite paint store and look at the latest trends to find the ones that are right for you, keeping in mind:

If you’re in doubt, take pictures of your space and consult a design specialist at a large hardware store. They’ll be able to provide ideas for complementary colors that would work in your home.

In addition to repainting, simple decorating solutions help change a home’s look. New cushions and throw rugs will update your color palette without breaking the bank. A large vase of dried flowers can transform your coffee table. In the bedrooms, new bedspreads and lamp shades will make all the difference. Seemingly little things can have a big impact.

It shouldn’t take much to ready your home for a fresh start. But if you find that you’ve outgrown your space, Lennar’s New Home Consultants are ready to help you find the perfect, brand-new home for a brand-new year. We hope 2019 will be your best yet!

Would you jump on an opportunity to maximize your positivity for the new year? Feng shui provides us just that. Early in Chinese culture, when people were beginning to learn how to farm animals and grow crops, they worried about the safety and prosperity of their families. Cue feng shui: the art and science of placement for greater positive energy flow.

Feng shui has since developed into a worldwide practice, incorporated in–among others–homes, offices, gardens, and even architecture. While it may sound complex, the basics are actually quite intuitive. We’ve created a guide with three simple feng shways for you to welcome the new year with a harmonized home.

1. Create a Soothing Environment

Personalize your home décor, so that your space reflects your individual taste. Prefer a calming environment? Turn to a blue color palette. For an interior that ignites your passion, a fiery red wall could be just what you need! You can also influence the mood in your home with essential oils. Chamomile and lavender are relaxing, while peppermint increases alertness, and citrus energizes. Additionally, consider placing a water fountain in your home or on your covered terrace, as the tranquil sound of the water reduces stress, anxiety, and cleanses the air. Lennar homes make it effortless to find the perfect space for a fountain with spacious floorplans, patios, and foyers.

2. Clear the Clutter

Clutter is a feng shui no-no. For the positive energy to flow throughout your home smoothly, there can’t be any messy disruptions. Take advantage of the ample storage Lennar homes offer–including large closets and often times, garages–and use the extra room for all your extra items! This way, you can store things that you don’t regularly use without having to say goodbye. An important space to keep clear is the area surrounding the front door: this is the portal for positive energy and also the first thing guests see when they walk in. And while you’re at it, go ahead and deeply clean for an all-around rejuvenating cleanse.

3. Brighten Your Space

Simple everyday things–sunlight, plants, and flowers–are so beneficial for our health. That’s why feng shui urges us to have them in our homes. With open layouts like Lennar’s, plants are the perfect complements to the expansive spaces. But make sure to opt for larger ones, so your space looks less cluttered. It’s also important to keep your windows spotless and unblocked. This allows you to clearly see the outside world, while bright light flows through the home, creating a welcoming space. And the steady stream of vitamin D is sure to boost your serotonin levels for a more positive mood!

Though an intricate system of placement, art, and energy, feng shui can be simple when you start with the basics. And it’s not only useful for inspiring your everyday life, it’s also a great way to keep your home clean, organized, and stylish.

You probably already have a list of New Year’s resolutions, but have you made any for your home? You heard us right! Your home could use some resolutions too. Don’t worry because we have made it easy with these 4 New Year home resolutions!

1. Cleaning and Decluttering

A new year means new beginnings so it’s the perfect time to do that deep cleaning. While you are in the process of putting away the decorations and cleaning up after the parties, you can also begin to declutter your home. The best way to start is room by room. For maximum efficiency, start with the room that is most used and create two piles, one for trash and one to donate. If you are short on time and can’t complete the project in one day, then make a list of rooms you need to declutter. Place the list in a prominent place, like the fridge, and you’ll be reminded to do it the next time you have a free weekend.

2. Care for your home with routine maintenance

Take the time to go through your home and take care of routine home maintenance items. When is the last time you replaced the batteries in your fire alarms? If you don’t remember, then put new batteries on your shopping list. And don’t forget the dryer lint. We all clean the lint trap in the dryer but even then some lint can escape and make its way to the vents behind the dryer creating a fire hazard.  In about 15 minutes, you can clean the ducts and vents behind the dryer.

3. Give a Room a New Look

You don’t have to do a full on renovation for your home to feel fresh and new. After the cleaning is done, then consider if you like to give a couple of rooms a new look. For a pop of green, try adding plants. The plants will possibly improve the air quality of the room and they’ll add some new color. For more color inspiration, try focusing on a new accent color. Rather than getting out the paint supplies, pull out a color that’s already in the room with throw pillows, blankets, and other small accent items. A new room for the new year without breaking the bank.

4. Take Control of the Utility Bills

Small changes can make a difference in your energy costs. Take your mother’s advice of turning off the lights as you leave the room and add another a touch by changing all your lightbulbs to LED. Control those heating bills by installing a new home automation thermostat. These days you control your lights, thermostats, and more with ease from your phone. With Lennar’s Connected Home part of the Everything’s Included guarantee it’s even easier to take advantage of these money saving techniques.

Here’s our 4 New Year home resolutions. Do you have any that you would add to the list?
