As many of us are suddenly adjusting to working from home, as well as spending the majority of time indoors, it inevitably will come with unexpected challenges. So in order to maintain productivity as well as mental clarity, there are some tools you can implement for a structured work-life balance.
Keep to your routine.
It might seem silly, but it’s been shown that continuing to wake up every day at the same time you normally would with your commute can help you maintain a productive structure. Go through your regular morning routine – whether that consists of exercise, showering or taking the dog out – then get dressed like you would for the work day outside your home.
Designate your work space.
Make sure you have an actual work space that’s set-up and ready to go, as tempting as it might be to just work in your pajamas from the couch. Creating and working in an environment that reflects your usual workspace will already have you more focused and committed to taking on the day’s work. Have fun with it – add some flair to make it really feel like your own. Consider setting up near a window so you still have a peek into the outside world.
Stick to your normal eating schedule.
When the line between work and home life becomes blurred, even the simplest structures hold great value. Keeping with your lunch and snack times will help you manage your time effectively to make for an easier transition. Since you have extra time at home – why not dive into meal prepping? If you were already a meal prepper, keep up with the same routine!
Get outside for at least 20 minutes a day.
You are probably sick of hearing this by now, but it’s true that even just going for a walk outside will help you disconnect from the indoor environment and reset your mental state. Consider going for a walk before and after each work day. It’s a good way to clear the mind and you can schedule it in like you would your typical “commute.”
Maintain your normal work schedule.
When we’re working from home, it’s easier to stay connected during the off hours because we never feel that physical break and departure from the day’s job. But committing to your normal schedule and getting your work done within those hours allows you to be more productive and log off at the end of the day. For a happier and healthier balance between your two colliding worlds.

Staying home doesn’t mean you can’t let your dog out in your private outdoor space. There is however some fear that pets will be abandoned due to financial difficulty. ASPCA is working quickly to find permanent and temporary homes for the pets in their care to prepare for this. Most of us are spending more time at home than ever before. We’re working from home, homeschooling our children, and spending nights in. Weekends are looking quite a bit different too – no team sports, no entertainment, no get-togethers. And while times are uncertain and the world is changing – flowers continue to bloom.
Spring is all about fresh starts, beautiful blooms, and now, more than ever, home projects.
Remember all those times you looked out into your backyard and thought, “one of these days, I’ll plant some flowers or a vegetable garden?”
Well, now is your chance!
Whether you’re new to gardening or a seasoned green thumb, we’ve compiled our list of the top tips & tricks for spring gardening.
1.Out with the old: Before planting anything new – rake out winter’s debris. Cut away last season’s foliage, rake mulch, weed, and remove any dead branches. Check your fences for mold and warping caused by freezing and thawing. Cut the grass. Prune shrubs. Power-wash pavers and decks to remove mildew and discoloration. Think of this as starting with a blank canvas and spring cleaning your yard.
2. Prepare your soil: Once you have an idea of where you’ll put your new flower beds or your fresh flowers, shrubs, or trees, it’s time to prepare the soil. When the ground thaws, remove the sod and spread a 4-inch layer of manure or compost over the soil, then work it 10-12 inches down into the soil with a spading fork and rake it.
3. Choose your plants: Some flowers and plants are best planted early in the spring season. Bulbs like daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips are ideally planted as early into the spring season as possible. These bright blooms are sure to add cheeriness to your backyard outlook and maybe even your outlook on life. Cool-season container-grown plants like sweet peas, poppies, and calendula, and vegetables such as some lettuces, parsley, spinach, potatoes, artichokes, and peas, are best planted and transplanted in the early spring. By mid-spring, it’s time to start planting hardy annuals like pansies or snapdragons. Spring is also the best season for planting new trees and shrubs. Planting these early will allow them plenty of time to grow new roots before summertime.
4. Layer your mulch: A fresh layer of mulch around all your flowers and shrubs will help reduce the amount of weeding you need to do later in the season. Mulch helps soil retain moisture and regulate the temperature retains more moisture, and helps moderate the temperature of your soil. To further lessen the number of weeds, you may also layer a weed barrier under the mulch. You can use the bags the mulch came in for free or utilize special weed barrier fabric.
5. Eco-optimize your garden: There are many ways you can have a more sustainable garden this year. Composting, for instance, can divert as much as 30% of household waste from landfills and is a natural alternative to chemical fertilizers. Composting also helps plant growth and health. You can also utilize wall butts to start collecting rainwater and using that to water your plants, yard, and flowers—an environmental and economical alternative to other watering methods.
If you’re sitting around at home, wondering what to do and feeling restless – a few hours outside getting your hands dirty and creating something beautiful will not only improve the aesthetic of your home but your mood as well.
On March 3rd, 2020, at 1 o’clock in the morning, a couple EF-3 and EF-4 tornados touched down and traveled through downtown and into Wilson County to the east, traveling as far as Cookeville, over 210 miles. The tornados struck a few hours before voting stations were scheduled to open for the Tennessee Super Tuesday primary, according to National Review .
At least two dozen people were killed, and thousands of buildings were left damaged or destroyed – with streets impassable with debris and downed power lines. Many more were left without power and some have just recently gotten it back. This kind of natural disaster is one that typically makes the national news for days. Hundreds, if not thousands, of volunteers quickly flooded the streets where the tornados struck, moving debris, helping residents salvage belongings, and setting up food stations to help sustain those picking through the wreckage.
Donations have poured into Music City in the wake of the March 3rd tornado, as city officials and residents look to rebuild expansive areas of Davidson County. On Wednesday, Mayor John Cooper told reporters more than $670,000 has been donated to the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, which officials have pointed to as the key resource for monetary donations, according to the foundation’s website. Those dollars have been redistributed to nonprofits in the community that are providing services to those impacted by the storm.
In addition, the Community Foundation’s collections, tech giant Google has committed $100,000 to Nashville’s recovery efforts, while Amazon, one of the city’s newest corporate recruits, has directly contributed supplies, the mayor said. Separately, Cooper said Hands on Nashville, the nonprofit tasked with coordinating volunteers, has received interest from 26,000 volunteers. Those volunteers have played a key role in helping Nashville transition from emergency to recovery. The previous owner of the Nashville Predators, Craig Leipold (now the owner of the Minnesota Wild), contributed a combined $50,000 to the recovery efforts. The National Hockey League (NHL) later matched that contribution.
Local Nashville Olympian, Shawn Johnson organized a fundraiser through GoFundMe on behalf of Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee and over the course of a week raised over $114,000 with 3.2K donors, and 22.K shares. Over the course of the week following the tornadoes, the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee says more than $6.5 million in donations has been pledged to go to their emergency relief fund. Tennessee also received a $476,000 federal grant to support the mental health needs of victims of deadly tornadoes earlier this month. The Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services says the grant comes from the Federal Emergency Management Agency Crisis Counseling and Training Program.
On March 4th, just two days after the tornado, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announced that the state had its first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus, according to the Tennessean. When calls for social distancing swept the nation as concerns about the coronavirus rose earlier this month, middle Tennessee was still reeling from the tornadoes. Houses were still roofless, people were still crashing on friends’ and family’s couches or in hotels and volunteers were still gathering by the hundreds to help the recovery.
This community, primed to show up physically for one another in a time of need, now grapples with an unprecedented challenge. How does a city deal with a natural disaster and a pandemic at the same time?
At the same time, the governor called for all schools in Tennessee to close last week to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. And since Monday, March 23, Nashville has been under a “safer at home order,” which closes all nonessential businesses and encourages residents to stay home. Still, volunteer efforts continued, even amid that changing tone. The focus had shifted from debris removal to donations, and organizations like Hands On Nashville, Gideon’s Army, and others established distribution centers for tornado victims to pick up donated food and supplies.
