If you’ve purchased a new Lennar home, you may have gorgeous new granite countertops! Granite is a very hard stone and is 100% natural. The stone is mined, cut, and then polished to a fine finish. People love granite for its natural beauty and durability to heat and other kitchen elements. But due to its porous nature, the surface should be sealed to prevent stains. So here’s a guide to help you through the process of sealing your granite and protecting your investment.

Choosing the right sealant

Search for a sealer made specifically for natural stone so that you will not harm your countertops. Also, look for an “impregnating” sealer which means it will soak into the countertop to reduce absorption and defend your surface from stains over a longer period of time. There are a few different sealers on the market that last for varying amounts of time based on the ingredients used. The longer lasting products tend to cost more, so you can also choose your sealant based on how much you prefer to spend, and how often you are willing to reapply. Read the sealant’s label thoroughly to understand the application method. Please note that if our instructions vary from the label, use the instructions on the label to ensure the best results.

Clean your surface before sealing

Simply clean the granite with soap and water. You can also use a degreasing agent or a specialized stone cleaner. Then, it is recommended to finish your cleaning with denatured alcohol. Be sure to use a lint-free cloth like a microfiber cloth while cleaning. Wait 24 hours to allow the countertop to dry completely. 

Apply the sealer

Wear gloves and ventilate the area before you start. It is recommended to test a small area first to make sure the product is compatible with your granite. If the sealer leaves a hazy residue or causes discoloration, choose a different sealer. If the sealant test area looks great, continue to seal the rest of your countertop. Apply the sealer evenly per the product instructions. The entire surface should be damp, but not soaked. Let the product absorb into the granite for the recommended time on the product label. 

Wipe off the sealer

After the absorption period has passed, wipe up the remaining sealant with a clean lint-free cloth. Be careful not to leave too much sealant behind, as it can cause a hazy finish which you don’t want taking away from the pretty shine of polished granite. 

Do not use the countertop for 48 hours

Leave the countertop alone for a minimum of 48 hours, or per the label instructions. The sealer needs this time to cure, and it’s important that it is fully cured in order for it to do its job of protecting your countertops from liquid, oil, or other stains. 

Now that your countertops are sealed, you can worry less! But still do your best to keep it clean and wipe up spills immediately. And remember to re-seal as directed. Women from Dallas-Fort Worth have always made indelible marks on history—just as surely as one of them invented a way to correct errors in the way we typed up all that stuff. 

Bette Nesmith Graham, a Dallas secretary, invented Liquid Paper in the 1950s, creating the white-out solution to brush over, and then correct, typos. Considered one of the 20th century’s most formidable female inventors, she belongs to a pantheon of north Texas women. Throughout March, Women’s History Month celebrates them all.

Countless other Dallas-Fort Worth personalities, past and present, include civil-rights leader Barbara Jordan, the first African American elected to the Texas Senate; Bonnie Parker, of Bonnie and Clyde fame; Annette Strauss, Dallas’ first female mayor; and Fort Worth’s Kelly Clarkson, whose hit, “Whole Lotta Woman” says, “Texas women do it bigger.”

Another powerhouse among Women in Texas History, and one of Texas’s first millionaires, Sarah Horton Cockrell owned a quarter of what is now Dallas’s Central Business District.
