Thanksgiving and the following weekend marks what is affectionately referred to as “the holidays”. The period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is a homecoming in a sense. The entire extended family comes together and gathers around the table for Thanksgiving. That means you better have adequate dining space for all of those cousins, aunts, and uncles! Those that can’t make Thanksgiving will make sure they are home for Christmas, even if they’re deployed in the military. A lot of people will take leave for a brief break to exchange gifts and spend time with loved ones around the beautifully illuminated tree. New Year’s Day marks the end of the “holiday season” and it’s back to work the day after.
You always look forward to the holidays, but there’s always that heavy sigh of relief when it’s over. It’s a lot of work to accommodate that many people. There’s the initial presentation of your spotless home, then there’s the cooking, the dishes, and the seemingly endless list of household chores associated with making your living room, dining room, kitchen, etc… look ship-shape again.
After that sigh of relief comes a wave of self-satisfaction. Another successful family holiday in the books. Memories have been made and old memories have been revisited. For some, it will be the last time you’ll see some aging relatives. For others, it is the first time you see a new member of your expanding family.
