As the weather gets colder, Lennar is here to help you navigate the ins and outs of preparing your home for the changes this season. There are a few simple things you can do to help minimize the impact the cold months will have on your home (and wallet).
Don’t neglect your gutters.
Gutters are one of your first lines of defense against unwanted water in your home, yet they often get overlooked. As the leaves begin to fall, you want to make sure that they do not clog up your gutters. A clogged gutter can lead to water finding its way inside your home and result in some hefty repair bills. So, while the leaves are still changing from green to golden, take a peek at the condition of your gutters and make sure they are free from clogging hazards. Preventative maintenance is key in this case. For a more carefree approach, consider gutter guards to help keep unwanted objects from getting into your gutters.
Speaking of water…
It’s important to disconnect any garden hoses you may have hooked up to the spigots of your home. This can prevent damage to your lawn equipment. After the hoses have been removed, be sure to turn off the water valves that lead to your outdoor faucets. Once the water is off, let your outdoor faucets run until they are empty. If there is water in an external pipe it has the potential to freeze and rupture when the temperature drops. That can be very costly and is easily avoidable by taking this simple precaution.
Remember the filters.
The air filters in your Lennar home allow your heat and air conditioning to flow through while trapping any unwanted particles before entering your space. However, an old or dirty filter can make it more difficult for the air to pass through and can result in your system working twice as hard. Not only is this an unnecessary waste of energy but, you guessed it, this can also increase your utility bills. Disposable filters can be vacuumed once before needing to be replaced but it is important to either clean or replace your filters monthly to ensure your home is as efficient as possible.
Fun fact: maintaining your filters can also help reduce seasonal allergy symptoms while inside your home.
While you’re at it…
Changing the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors should be done regularly, so go ahead and replace the batteries at this time. This simple step can help to protect you, your loved ones, and your Lennar home from tragedy.
Once you’ve tackled this short list of preventative maintenance items for your home, snuggle up under a cozy blanket, pour yourself a warm mug of apple cider and rest easy knowing your home is prepared for the chilly weather ahead.
