Lennar, one of the nation’s leading homebuilders, and ICON, a construction technologies company pioneering large-scale 3D printing, today announced a commitment to build the largest community of 3D-printed homes to date using ICON’s innovative robotics, software and advanced materials. Breaking ground in 2022, the 100-home community will be codesigned by the acclaimed architecture firm, BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group.

The announcement deepens a relationship that began with Lennar’s investment in Austin-based ICON’s recent $207-million financing round and offers a promising path toward delivering affordable, technology-driven homes that meet rising demand.

“Labor and material shortages are two of the biggest factors pushing the dream of home ownership out of reach for many American families,” said Eric Feder, President of LENX. “Lennar has always expanded the boundaries of technological innovation to keep quality homes affordable and 3D printing is an immensely encouraging approach. We are excited to collaborate with ICON to develop solutions to emerging challenges in the coming years.”

ICON’s 3D printing technology produces resilient, energy-efficient homes faster than conventional construction methods with less waste and more design freedom – keeping construction projects on schedule and on budget. Designed and engineered from the ground up for volume 3D printing of homes with precision and speed, ICON’s Vulcan construction system can deliver homes and structures up to 3,000 square feet that are built to the International Building Code (IBC) structural code standard and expected to last as long or longer than standard Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) built homes. ICON’s proprietary wall system and advanced materials are stronger and longer-lasting than traditional building materials and provide safer, more resilient homes that are designed to withstand extreme weather, greatly reduce the impact of natural disasters, and be printed at high speeds and at scale.

“ICON exists as a response to the global housing crisis and to put our technology in service to the world,” said ICON co-founder and CEO Jason Ballard.  “Construction-scale 3D printing not only delivers higher-quality homes faster and more affordably, but fleets of printers can change the way that entire communities are built for the better. The United States faces a deficit of approximately 5 million new homes, so there is a profound need to swiftly increase supply without compromising quality, beauty, or sustainability and that is exactly the strength of our technology. It is an honor and a huge milestone for ICON to partner with Lennar, an elite top-tier homebuilder with a commitment to innovation.  We believe this will be a watershed moment in the history of community-scale development and the future breaking into the present.”

“Additive manufacturing has the potential to revolutionize the built environment as it gets adopted by the industry at scale,” said Martin Voelkle, Partner, BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group. “By partnering with ICON and Lennar, we are able to see this new technology roll out to the widest possible audience. The 3D-printed architecture and the photovoltaic roofs are innovations that are significant steps towards reducing waste in the construction process, as well as towards making our homes more resilient, sustainable, and energy self-sufficient.”

Lennar’s investment in ICON’s Series B financing round in August was facilitated by LENX, which drives a focused strategy within Lennar to integrate technology solutions across the homebuilding industry. With a clearly defined strategy of investing in technology companies directly adjacent to Lennar’s core homebuilding operations and a disciplined investment process, LENX provides hands-on mentorship and guidance from senior leaders of Lennar’s management team and a marquee opportunity to provide products and technology to Lennar customers, allowing portfolio companies to scale at an unprecedented pace.

Ask anyone what their favorite season is, and most are quick to reply, “fall!” The temperatures are mild, the decor is cozy, the food is comforting, and the celebrations are festive – especially in Atlanta. Autumn is the season where the Big Peach truly shines. Here are just a few of the best things to do in Atlanta this fall:

Stone Mountain Park

Nestled in 3,200 acres of natural beauty, visitors enjoy family-friendly attractions, outdoor recreational activities, and year-round events. You can spend a whole day exploring Stone Mountain Park. There are over 15 miles of nature trails for hiking, including a 1-mile trail to the summit of Stone Mountain. Enjoy a picnic by the 363 acre lake, or tee-off on one of two beautiful golf courses. Bring your camera and have a family photoshoot at one of the many picturesque spots throughout the park – from the Grist Mill to the historic Washington W. King covered bridge. One of the park’s best events, the Pumpkin Festival, is now through October 31 on select days. Enjoy family-friendly park attractions and fall entertainment all day. Then, after the sun goes down, discover the new Nighttime Parade and plenty of other new, not-so-spooky, glowing experiences!

Stone Mountain Georgia

Sweetwater Creek State Park

This 2,549 acre Georgia state park is located in east Douglas County, 15 miles from downtown Atlanta. Throw on your best flannel and pack a picnic basket for a fun-filled day at Sweetwater. Discover miles of wooded trails along the stream to the ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company, a textile mill that was burned during the Civil War. Beyond the mill, the trail climbs rocky bluffs to provide views of the beautiful rapids below. The landscape at this state park is stunning – from the fields and forest, ferns, magnolias, wild azaleas, and hardwoods. On your route back home, make a pitstop at Reformation Brewery for a cold beer, a game of bingo, and some BBQ.

Atlanta Halloween Half Marathon/5K

Fall is the perfect time to lace up your running shoes and hit the pavement, and the Atlanta Halloween Half Marathon and 5k is the ideal inspiration to get in shape.

Apple Picking

One of everybody’s favorite fall pastimes is apple picking, and there’s no better place for it than in Atlanta. Discover many of the various charming farms near the city, including Urban Sprout Farms, Mitcham Farm, and My Dad & Me Family Farm. Bring the kiddos, wear some flannel and enjoy a day of good old-fashioned family fun. Don’t stop there – take your fresh pickings home and whip up a homemade apple pie.

The Inn at Serenbe

Atlanta has a lot of hidden gems, but one of the best, and one of our favorites, is the Inn at Serenbe. This rural, upscale inn is located just 30 miles outside of Atlanta, making it the perfect romantic autumn staycation. Cozy up in the farmhouse or a cottage for a long weekend, and discover the charm of Chattahoochee Hills. Start your day with a complimentary country breakfast at the inn or an artisanal coffee at the quaint Blue Eyed Daisy Bakery. Next up, enjoy a class at the nearby Studio13 or Serenbe Yoga + Bodyworks. Continue the activities with a visit to the Art Farm or the Serenbe Farm’s market. Here, you can shop for various healthy food and artisan goods from local vendors. If you bring the kiddos along, they’ll love visiting with and petting the local farm animals. If you still have the energy to explore, there are 900+ acres of trails on the inn grounds, an outdoor pool, hot tub, and croquet lawn. Lastly, when hunger strikes, there are a variety of dining options near Serenbe. The Farmhouse offers organic, farm-to-table cuisine in an airy, genteel setting with country touches.

Rooftop Bars

Autumn is the perfect season for making the most of the crisp, cool air and cozying up on a rooftop bar. The Clermont Hotel and Rooftop Bar is one of our favorites. Here, you can enjoy a hot toddy in the fall and the romance of the skyline view. Grana is another favorite rooftop for cozy fall nights. Enjoy a comforting meal, like a wood-fired pizza or Pascarella’s handmade pasta, while overlooking Piedmont and cozying up by the fire pits.

Football game

Autumn, America, and football are a trio as old as time, and nowhere does football quite like Atlanta. Cheer on your local Falcons at the Mercedes Benz Stadium all season. If the game isn’t your thing, organize a crew, a few fun appetizers, some local craft beers, and some games for a pre-game tailgate.

As the weather gets colder, Lennar is here to help you navigate the ins and outs of preparing your home for the changes this season. There are a few simple things you can do to help minimize the impact the cold months will have on your home (and wallet).

Don’t neglect your gutters.

Gutters are one of your first lines of defense against unwanted water in your home, yet they often get overlooked. As the leaves begin to fall, you want to make sure that they do not clog up your gutters. A clogged gutter can lead to water finding its way inside your home and result in some hefty repair bills. So, while the leaves are still changing from green to golden, take a peek at the condition of your gutters and make sure they are free from clogging hazards. Preventative maintenance is key in this case. For a more carefree approach, consider gutter guards to help keep unwanted objects from getting into your gutters.

Speaking of water…

It’s important to disconnect any garden hoses you may have hooked up to the spigots of your home. This can prevent damage to your lawn equipment. After the hoses have been removed, be sure to turn off the water valves that lead to your outdoor faucets. Once the water is off, let your outdoor faucets run until they are empty. If there is water in an external pipe it has the potential to freeze and rupture when the temperature drops. That can be very costly and is easily avoidable by taking this simple precaution.

Remember the filters.

The air filters in your Lennar home allow your heat and air conditioning to flow through while trapping any unwanted particles before entering your space. However, an old or dirty filter can make it more difficult for the air to pass through and can result in your system working twice as hard. Not only is this an unnecessary waste of energy but, you guessed it, this can also increase your utility bills. Disposable filters can be vacuumed once before needing to be replaced but it is important to either clean or replace your filters monthly to ensure your home is as efficient as possible.

Fun fact: maintaining your filters can also help reduce seasonal allergy symptoms while inside your home.

While you’re at it…

Changing the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors should be done regularly, so go ahead and replace the batteries at this time. This simple step can help to protect you, your loved ones, and your Lennar home from tragedy.

Once you’ve tackled this short list of preventative maintenance items for your home, snuggle up under a cozy blanket, pour yourself a warm mug of apple cider and rest easy knowing your home is prepared for the chilly weather ahead.  And, if you are looking for a new place to call home, Lennar has a variety of homes and communities with something just right for you.  Each Lennar home is equipped with Everything’s Included® and Connected Home features to let you move in and enjoy the season.
