Whoever coined the term “Southern hospitality,” must have had Georgia on their mind. More specifically, Atlanta. It’s tough to find a more welcoming city anywhere in the country. That hospitality, along with the professional sports teams, climate, and nightlife have people flocking to the ATL. Not only does the city have a lot to offer, but the surrounding suburbs offer many perks to newcomers as well. We only have space to list some of the reasons to move to Atlanta.

1. Jobs Are Everywhere

Many top companies are headquartered in Atlanta, making for great job opportunities or a career change. Newcomers are either already hired by these companies or often land a job once they get into town. Atlanta came in at one of the top 12 largest metro areas for employment and gained more than 53,000 over the past year. There are 15 Fortune 500 companies in town, including Home Depot, UPS, Delta Airlines, CNN, and Coca-Cola. The question isn’t really whether you can find a job, but rather which opportunity you should choose.

2. Close to Nature

Atlanta has plenty of nicknames, but one of the most accurate is “City in a Forest.” A quick 20-minute drive from downtown will make you feel worlds away from the hustle and bustle of town. You’ll find that plenty of neighbors who head to the forest after work or on the weekends. You can even sleep in a tree overnight at Panola Mountain State Park. Covered bridges welcome you at Heritage Park just 30 minutes from Atlanta with over 100 acres to explore and plenty of wetland wildlife to view. Atlanta also has plenty of recreation options within the city, including Centennial Olympic Park.

3. Sports Lover’s Dream

There’s no excuse for boredom here. With all the professional teams that call this city home, there’s always something in season. Rooting for your favorite team is easy in world-class venues that cater to quality sports viewing. The NBA has a special place in Atlanta since the city is home to the NBA Network. Sports fans enjoy attending Falcons, Braves, Hawks, WNBA’s Atlanta Dream, and MLS’s Atlanta United FC games. Lacrosse fans can watch the Georgia Swarm and Atlanta Blaze in large arenas.

4. Southern Food Is the Best

The culinary delights available in the “Capital of the South” are extensive. You won’t have any trouble finding delicious food from the street cart on the corner to the many fine restaurants around the city. Soul food is a specialty with plenty of options in every neighborhood. Barbecue and fried chicken are also easy to find no matter where you are. Try Pittypat’s Porch located downtown for an introduction to the best soul food around.

5. Cost of Living

Sometimes called the “New York of the South,” the cost of living in Atlanta is much lower. If you’re transferring here from another metropolitan area, you’ll find the same size home for a lot less. Development is ongoing, so you’ll find plenty of new homes as well. You’ll also enjoy lower transportation, utility, and healthcare costs, so your dollar will go further. The lower cost of living is one reason more millennials are moving to the area. According to U.S. News and World Report, half the population is single.

Atlanta is also family-friendly and known for its religious and family values. You have to hand it to those Southern moms who taught their sons to hold the doors open for you!

Denise Decker is an avid hiker, cyclist, and runner who travels around the country, taking part in triathlons. When she’s not writing about her races or travels, you’ll find her biking along the trails in Atlanta.

Football season has only just started, which means plenty of opportunities to host your friends and family to support your team no matter how far from the field you are. This blog is your guide to making the most of this time of year with simple, delicious recipes for game day, as well as some quick tips to make your space ready for a watch party.

Recipes

It’s always a good idea to have something tasty to reach for during the game that’s easy to throw together beforehand. Try some meatball sliders for a delicious crowd-pleaser or offer some seaside themed fare like steamed shrimp with a fresh cocktail sauce for dipping. Just don’t forget a bowl for the tails.

Spend some time looking online to find a guide to the perfect chili to really give your guests something to get excited over, or find a buffalo chicken dip recipe to get your friends and family’s mouths watering.

Decorations

Welcome your friends and family into a home that’s unapologetically supporting your team by crafting a custom wreath. Head to any craft store and pick up artificial flowers in the colors of your team and weave them into a circle, as a show of support you can hang on the front door of your home. And, while you’re grabbing those flowers, pick up some coasters to match the color scheme of your team to bring the spirit to the family room furniture!

Pick up some balloons—some with helium, and some without. This will really elevate things from watching a game with some friends over to a full-fledged party for a team worth celebrating.

Preparing the Space

While your guests are watching the game, keep in mind they can only be kept on the edge of their seats if they have somewhere to sit. Make sure to have enough spots to keep all of your guests comfortable and to avoid somebody having to stand the entire game. Take advantage of your home’s garage as a space to store extra folding chairs and a table to make sure everybody has a place to sit down and enjoy the food you made.

Whether it’s the start of the college football season or a Super Bowl watch party, these recipes are sure to be a hit with any crowd. Make sure your space is properly prepared to host a number of friends and families with enough seats for everybody and coasters for the drinks to protect your end tables and windowsills. The garage in most homes is where old toys, sports equipment, tools, seasonal items, and unwanted junk goes to collect dust in unorganized and inconvenient heaps. After a few years in a home, you may even find your garage so cluttered with accumulated stuff, that your car gets kicked to the curb.

Want to avoid tripping over baseball bats and spending cold winter mornings chiseling the ice off your windshield? Then it’s time to get your garage in gear.

  1. Ditch and Donate: Do you really need that bucket full of broken hockey sticks or all five of those snow shovels? Will you ever put that pile of scrap wood to use? Get real with yourself and part with the items you no longer use or need. Organize a community yard sale or collect and drop unused items at your local donation drop. This is an essential step towards a more organized and functional garage.
  2. Organize Up: To ensure your car has a cozy space in the garage, we recommend saving as much floor space as possible. To save floor space – build up. You can utilize Ikea shelving designed specifically for garages, or you can finally put that scrap wood to use and build one yourself. A few simple shelves with space for storage containers will make finding tools, toys, and seasonal clothing much easier.
  3. Hoist it Up: Outdoor enthusiasts with bicycles and kayaks, for example, will find their hobbies taking up a large portion of their garage space. Instead of prioritizing your Trek bike over your car, compromise. You can utilize ceiling hooks or beams designed specifically for bike storage, so both your vehicle and your bikes are protected during those cold winter months.
  4. Dedicate Zones: Are you a DIY’er, yardwork enthusiast, or have a brood of multi-talented athletes? Do all three apply? If so, you’ll want to play a zone defense. Designate sections of the garage for each category. For example, tools, building materials, and paint should be organized by category in the “workshop.” This can essentially be a pegboard and workbench in one corner of the garage. Here, you can hold your nails, screws, washers, and bolts in labeled containers and display everything you need by category for smoother project execution.
  5. Get Creative: Items often found in the garage can be awkward and take up far too much space. Don’t let these objects get you down. To save your garage from chaos, you’ll need to get creative. Here are a few hacks:

How you organize and simplify your garage will vary based on your interests, hobbies, and the kind of items your garage happens to be filled with. The goal is the same for all of us, maintaining an organized, functional, and easy to use and navigate space – but most importantly, a safe and protected home for your vehicle.
