Thanksgiving is one of the best times for home cooks to shine, especially if you have one of Lennar’s renowned gourmet kitchens.

Most traditional Thanksgiving dinners include turkey as the star of the show, but once in a while, it’s nice to break away from tradition and add something new to the menu.

Below are six turkey alternatives to consider serving this Thanksgiving Day:

1. Honey-Glazed Baked Ham

For those who don’t already serve ham on Thanksgiving, honey-glazed baked ham is a classic dish perfect for a holiday family meal. The great thing about baked ham is that you can jazz it up with an orange or cranberry glaze to add extra flare. Baking it with brown sugar or adding pineapples also adds a great layer of taste.

2. Cornish Game Hens

For smaller families, serving each family member their own personal Cornish game hen would be a very pleasant surprise. These can be oven roasted and seasoned in a variety of ways, ranging from lemon and basil to garlic herb.

3. Oven-Roasted Chicken

A familiar family alternative is oven-roasted chicken. Oftentimes, you can find oven-roasted chicken served in your local chain grocery store. In an effort to avoid the Thanksgiving shopping rush and potentially altered hours of operation, cooking them fresh at home is the preferred alternative. A good tip to cooking a juicy roasted chicken is to brine it with a little water, salt, sugar, and honey. This will help to increase moisture, make the skin crispier and improve overall taste.

4. Roast Beef

Rosemary, sage, and dried bay leaves are some of the smells that remind us of holiday cooking in the kitchen. These are all seasonings that properly compliment a hearty dish like a holiday roast beef. This dish can also pairs well with many holiday favorites like roasted potatoes, honey glazed carrots or caramelized shallots.

5. Tofu Turkey

For those interested in vegan or vegetarian options, brands such as Tofurky and Gardein offer vegan turkeys, roasts and hams. These brands and their products can be found at grocery stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. Recommending pairing for this entrée include mashed sweet potatoes or roasted butternut squash.

6. Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms

If tofu turkey is not your taste, stuffed Portobello mushrooms are also a great vegan- and vegetarian-friendly alternative that will fill stomachs. Experiment stuffing your Portobello mushrooms with spinach, goat cheese, or maybe even some holiday stuffing.

So what will you have for Thanksgiving this year? Trying one of these alternative dishes could inspire a new holiday tradition in your home for years to come. Or, you may find a new favorite entrée for regular family dinners.

Ultimately, these meals help bring everyone in the house together to enjoy quality time and be thankful for family.

Happy Thanksgiving from everyone in the Lennar family to yours!

What is Friendsgiving?

Friendsgiving is a gathering of friends enjoying a Thanksgiving meal. The combination of the words friend and Thanksgiving became what we know as “Friendsgiving.” Although the hit TV show Friends is often known for popularizing the idea, “Friendsgiving” has been dated back to 2007 in the Merriam-Wester lexicographers.

How Friendsgiving came to be?

Traditionally the Thanksgiving holiday is known to be celebrated by families coming together and enjoying a big meal while spending some quality time with one another. However, as people grow older and become young adults, they go off to college or move to another city because of work. It then becomes harder to go home for the holidays. Besides travel impediments, often people avoid going home to see their families due to personal problems, among other reasons. And because friends tend to be the family one gets to choose, it’s only natural for individuals to want to celebrate the holiday with their closest friends in the fun way we call Friendsgiving. It is also common that young adults celebrate both Friendsgiving and Thanksgiving.

Friendsgiving Date?

There is no official date for when Friendsgiving should be celebrated. It is usually celebrated sometime during the week approaching the actual holiday. However, it’s most commonly celebrated the Wednesday before the actual Thanksgiving Day.

How to throw your own Friendsgiving?

Throwing a Friendsgiving gathering is simple. The one hosting the party is usually responsible for cooking or buying the turkey. Friends invited then bring the sides, drinks, desserts and let’s not forget the wine. For some fun photos, it is always fun to make a cute backdrop. Set the mood by making a playlist all your friends will enjoy. To get the word out make a list of your closest friends and create a Facebook event, which will make it easier for you to invite and communicate with everyone.

So whether you can’t make it home for Thanksgiving or just need an excuse to celebrate with friends, Friendsgiving is a great way to do so.

As you prepare for the holiday season, ensure that your Lennar home is ready for the change to cooler weather. Follow these four tips to easily transition into the holiday season and keep your home in great shape.

1. Monitor your heating system

Florida rarely experiences true winter weather, which means it may have been quite a while since your heater was last used. Under normal conditions, a home’s heater will let off a burning smell when it turns on for the first time in a few months. That scent can tell you a few things about the condition of your heater.

Normally, that unpleasant smell is dust burning off of the heating elements of your heat pump, furnace, electric heater or other heating system. Typically, this smell lasts around 30 minutes, but if it lasts longer or makes a strange sound, it may require the attention of a professional.

To maintain your HVAC system, make sure to change your air filter every one to three months and clear leaves and debris from your outdoor unit.

2. Maintain your fireplace

If you have a fireplace in your home, the holiday season is the best time to get cozy by the fire. Any buildup in your fireplace could be a fire hazard, though. To ensure that your fireplace is operational for the winter, hire a chimney sweeper to do a maintenance check before it gets too cool and when the wait time is shorter.

3. Prepare for electrical holiday decorations

When stringing lights inside and outside of your home, be cautious of where you are plugging in your lights and décor. Incorrect placement or overcrowding of an outlet can lead to an electrical fire. The safest way to create more outlets is to use one power strip per outlet and to not stack power strips to create more outlets. A surge protector can be used to help prevent an overload and protect your lights from voltage spikes.

4. Be safe and energy-smart when decorating

The easiest way to save energy with your holiday decorations is to use a mechanical timer for indoor and outdoor decorations. Timers can be purchased with an outlet extender and can be programmed to shut off after a few hours of use after dawn or dusk.

If you plan on hanging decorations, such as garlands or banners along the walls in your home, use small damage-free adhesive wall hooks.

Now is the perfect time to be in your dream home for the holidays. Be part of Lennar’s quick move-in homes in 58 communities in Tampa Bay.

Thanksgiving and the following weekend marks what is affectionately referred to as “the holidays”.  The period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is a homecoming in a sense.  The entire extended family comes together and gathers around the table for Thanksgiving.  That means you better have adequate dining space for all of those cousins, aunts, and uncles!  Those that can’t make Thanksgiving will make sure they are home for Christmas, even if they’re deployed in the military. A lot of people will take leave for a brief break to exchange gifts and spend time with loved ones around the beautifully illuminated tree.  New Year’s Day marks the end of the “holiday season” and it’s back to work the day after.

You always look forward to the holidays, but there’s always that heavy sigh of relief when it’s over.  It’s a lot of work to accommodate that many people.  There’s the initial presentation of your spotless home, then there’s the cooking, the dishes, and the seemingly endless list of household chores associated with making your living room, dining room, kitchen, etc… look ship-shape again.

After that sigh of relief comes a wave of self-satisfaction.  Another successful family holiday in the books.  Memories have been made and old memories have been revisited.  For some, it will be the last time you’ll see some aging relatives.  For others, it is the first time you see a new member of your expanding family.

Whatever the holidays bring your household, Lennar wants to be your home builder of choice through the years.  We’ll be with you whether you’re buying your first home, upgrading to a larger home to better suit your larger family, or when the kids have gone off to college or have jobs of their own and you need something a little smaller.

Most home builders appear to have a low price point, but once you show any interest in making a home purchase, you quickly find out that all of those things that you loved when you toured the model home are all optional upgrades.  You could get charged $300 for pre-wiring for a ceiling fan or pendant lighting, over $1,000 for moderately upgraded flooring that you didn’t get to pick out (this even includes “upgraded” carpeting), $1,000+ for granite or quartz surfaces, extra money for elevated bathroom sinks, thousands for appliances, and the list goes on and on… sometimes the second story or loft you saw when you walked through the model is even an upgrade that costs tens of thousands of dollars!

With Lennar Jacksonville, those upgrades and optional luxuries you love aren’t options or upgrades at all.  With Lennar, you get these things and more.  You get everything included.  We won’t nickel and dime you over the extras.  With us, what you see is what you get: quartz countertops?  Included.  High-quality wood grain tile flooring?  Included.  Modern stainless-steel appliances?  Paver driveways? LED lighting?  You guessed it, Everything’s Included with Lennar homes.

And with Lennar homes, you get something else:  The first Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ Home Designs in the country!  Lennar’s Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Home Design™ guarantees consistent, reliable coverage in every room of the home.  This is something we are truly excited to offer our homeowners!

Don’t settle for a home that doesn’t fulfill all of your highest expectations for comfort and quality just because you think it’s unattainable.  Luxury and amenities shouldn’t be something you have to sacrifice to live the lifestyle your hard work has earned for you and your family.  Get the home you want, in the community you want, with all the features and fixtures that change it from a house into your home.  Get a home with everything included from Lennar!
