A smart home isn’t just a collection of Wi-Fi connected products, but devices that integrate seamlessly throughout the home. Through interoperability – the ability of a system of work with parts of another system – the benefit of each connected device increases. In this recent Builder Online article, John McManus describes smart home interoperability, and how Lennar is leading the way for integration between smart home manufacturers and installers.
While it would be foolish to suggest one can suddenly fairly use the term “smart” next to the term “home,” it looks like real progress is being made as builders partner earlier and earlier with tech providers to deliver integrated, hack-proof, customer-centric packages that connect room air comfort, home security, lighting and window blinds, appliances, and entertainment to a single voice recognition device or phone.
An article that appeared in this weekend’s Los Angeles Times, by Jack Flemming, reports, “As smart homes become smarter, tech companies rush to get in the door.”
Flemming calls attention to two builders who’ve pushed to the front of the pack to engineer and build homes with wi-fi-enabled connected features as standard, Brookfield Homes and Lennar.
Lennar’s Wi-Fi Certified program level-sets the nation’s No. 2 ranked home builder’s “Everything’s Included” strategy at a new level, and one that can keep growing smarter.
Lennar’s point person on the Wi-Fi Certified program was David J. Kaiserman, president, Lennar Ventures, an innovation and collaboration incubator that brought multiple players together–Ruckus Wi-Fi, Amazon Echo, Samsung SmartThings and other smart home brands like Ring, Spectrum Brands’ Baldwin locks, Honeywell, Lutron and Sonos–as part of the “Everything’s Included” value proposition.
Key to the performance of each interoperable feature, the Ruckus Wi-Fi enterprise system ensures full wi-fi coverage without structured wiring. Kaiserman told CE Pro’s Lisa Montgomery:
“There is a lot of science that goes into integrating a strong, reliable Wi-Fi network into a home,” says Kaiserman. “You need to consider not only where the components of the system will be placed, but the construction materials and structure of the home.”
Lennar’s “Everything’s Included” position is a differentiator at a time home builders are crowded into an increasingly consolidated, finite ranking of top 25 or so new-home markets nationwide. This past July, Lennar announced that it’s rolled out its Wi-Fi Certified Homes in 12 communities…

MIAMI, Sept. 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — To help make the dream of homeownership more achievable for buyers with college debt, Eagle Home Mortgage today debuted a mortgage program with a feature that helps pay off outstanding student loans – up to $13,000, depending on sales price.
Borrowers with Eagle Home Mortgage’s Student Loan Debt Mortgage Program can direct up to 3% of the purchase price to pay their student loans when they buy a new home from Lennar (NYSE: LEN and LEN.B), one of the nation’s largest homebuilders. Eagle Home Mortgage is a full-service mortgage lender and part of the Lennar family of companies. Lennar contributes the 3%, which does not increase the price of the home or add to the mortgage loan balance.
“Americans are more burdened than ever by student loans, with $1.3 trillion in outstanding student loans spread out among 42 million borrowers,” said Jimmy Timmons, President of Eagle Home Mortgage. “Particularly with millennial buyers, people who want to buy a home of their own are not feeling as though they can move forward. Our program is designed to relieve some of that burden and remove that barrier to owning a home.”
As research by a variety of academic and financial institutions reveals, a significant majority of college-educated people who want to buy a home feel constrained by outstanding educational loans. According to data compiled by the New York Federal Reserve, the average outstanding balance among borrowers with a student loan is $26,700. For homebuilders like Lennar, working with lenders like Eagle Home Mortgage on innovative programs is essential to putting new homes within reach of more buyers.
“Lennar is proud to offer this unique and groundbreaking program to our buyers,” said Jon Jaffe, Chief Operating Officer of Lennar. “From our signature Everything’s Included® program to loans that address the concerns of today’s buyers, Lennar is committed to helping families realize the dream of owning their own home. Education is an investment in yourself and your community – and Lennar wants to help ensure that college loans don’t unnecessarily stand in the way of homeownership.”
With the Student Loan Debt Mortgage Program, buyers must meet credit and income requirements and can qualify for loans with down payments as low as 3%. The Student Loan Debt Mortgage Program is being offered on a trial basis with new Lennar homes nationwide. As one of the nation’s largest homebuilders, Lennar provides a wide range of single-family residences, townhomes or detached condos to fit almost any lifestyle and price point.
At closing, Lennar contributes up to 3% of the purchase price to pay down student loans incurred while attending universities, colleges, community colleges, trade schools and other certificate-granting programs. It is not intended for parents who may have taken loans to finance a child’s education. The maximum loan amount is $424,100. In addition to the 3% contribution to student loan balances, buyers may also be eligible for other incentives – such as credits toward closing costs.

The first day of Fall is upon us, and with the turning of the season, nature takes on some pleasant changes. We feel the crisp air roll over us and see the leaves don vibrant colors; bountiful harvests grace our tables, and we cannot help but feel a draw to the outdoors, as we light bonfires, eat s’mores, and rake piles of leaves to jump in with glee. Autumn is a festive season, a time when nature cheers with vibrancy before the bitter winter. To celebrate the beginning of Fall, here are six decorating tips to bring the cheer of the season into your home.

Display a bountiful harvest at your front door! Line the porch steps with pumpkins and gourds of various sizes and colors, and intersperse the vegetables with potted croton and mums to enhance the Fall color scheme. Purchase a plain coir doormat and transform it with spray paint to appear more festive amidst the Autumn fruition. And, construct a festal wreath for your door, which you can brighten with a new coat of paint of a different color.

As the crisp Autumn air sets in, there is an irresistible urge to cozy up by a warm fire with a good book and a glass of wine. A lit fireplace always looks inviting to guests, and you can add to its charm by decorating the mantel with seasonal décor. Your options are unlimited to frame a nicer flame; you can use an autumnal garland or collections of seasonal emblems – leaves, acorns, pumpkins, pinecones, and more – or even frame your favorite Fall quote.

Fall colors are warm, vibrant, and cozy; your room can feel the same way with strategically-chosen items that reflect the season’s color palette. This can be earth-tone furniture made of natural materials or smaller articles – hanging art, pillow covers, rugs, or throws – of red, orange, copper, bronze, and wine.

Autumn is a second spring, nature’s moment of second splendor; walk outside, and you see every leaf is a flower and the air smells of spice. The most simple and inexpensive way to decorate your home this season is to walk outside and gather autumnal icons – birch tree branches, pinecones, nuts, berries, Fall wildflowers, pumpkins, etc. – to fill your home. You can create lovely centerpieces with baskets of harvest apples or grace the bookshelves with colorful leaves; go online and discover you can make a wide assortment of DIY decorations that last longer than a season.

The soft, warm glow of candles adds to the charm and comfort a room may already possess if donned with autumnal flair. Lanterns or glass hurricane lamp globes with pillar candles surrounded by acorns, coffee beans, or candy corn make appealing centerpieces for coffee tables or showpieces descending the steps of the porch. You can also hollow out small pumpkins, gourds, or blocks of wood to make unique candleholders. And, to enhance the Fall ambiance, scented candles will please the senses.

We identify Autumn as harvest time, and as such think of farmers and farmsteads; therefore, incorporating rustic features in your home décor is a popular design choice. You can find all sorts of materials available at Hobby Lobby and Michaels, like faux cotton branches and wheat stalks, or explore antique stores in search of old watering cans, pitchers, wagon wheels, deer antlers, and farm tools.
