According to a 2012 study by Pew Research Center, a record seven million Americans, 18.1% of the population, lived in multi-generational family households, double the figure who lived in a household with at least two adult generations in 1980.

That same study found 22.7% of adults ages 85 and older lived in a multi-generational household.  Moreover, roughly one in four young adults ages 25-34 lived in multi-generational households in 2012, up from 18.7% in 2007 and 11% in 1980, according to the study.

A Houston family on average will spend $43,472 per year for a licensed professional to help with cooking, cleaning and running errands and $43,500 per year for a private room in an assisted-living facility, according to a 2015 study on the long-term costs of care in Houston conducted by Genworth Financial.

Lennar’s masterplanned community Gossamer Grove celebrated the move-in of its first family last weekend with a founding family ceremony. The ceremony took place almost exactly one year after Lennar broke ground on Gossamer Grove.

“In one year, we’ve been able to commemorate significant milestones as we work toward the vision of building this community in Shafter,” said Lennar Central Valley Division President Mike Miller. “On April 8, 2016, the Melendy family officially became the founding family of Gossamer Grove and we couldn’t be more delighted to celebrate them.”

The Melendy family is one of several families who closed on their homes in April, but obtains the unique distinction of being the first to move into a community that, when finished, will provide more than 3,000 homes to the Central Valley.

“Our new home is amazing,” said Brandon Melendy. “I love that it’s near the edge of town. It doesn’t feel like you’re in the city, but you have the city nearby.”
