Spring Maintenance in the Central Valley

It’s been a cold and wet winter, but soon the sun will be shining, the flowers blooming and the birds chirping. As we move into warmer weather, it’s time to assess your home for any lingering issues from last season. Here is a quick checklist you can use to make sure your home is ready for the hotter conditions in the Central Valley.

Exteriors

Now that the sun is out, it’s the ideal time to give the exterior of your home a little TLC. Taking care of any minor damage now can help prevent costly repairs in the long run.

  • Repair loose gutters or leaks and remove debris that can prevent free flow of water.
  • Check drainage to ensure nothing is causing water to puddle for an extended amount of time.
  • Inspect, lubricate and clean all exterior vents.
  • Inspect and adjust sprinkler systems for the new season.
  • Visually check the roof for any lost or damaged shingles or masonry.
  • Inspect concrete areas for cracks. Fill with appropriate crack filler or caulk.

Landscape

Your yard made it through the chill, now it’s time to reward it for holding strong. Help it recover and get ready for more outdoor living as the temperatures rise.

  • Rake the yard and remove winter debris.
  • Fill in low areas in your yard or near foundation with soil. Re-mulch and aerate if needed.
  • Once the ground fully thaws, start preparing new garden beds for summer.
  • Service your lawn mower and yard equipment for yard work in the warmer months.

Interiors

‘Tis the season for spring cleaning! Areas of the home that may get neglected need some special attention while winter items, such as humidifiers, should be cleaned before putting them away until next year.

  • Inspect and service the air conditioning system.
  • Clean or replace air conditioning filters.
  • Dust and clean areas around windows, above cabinets, ceiling fans and drapes.
  • Vacuum the coils behind the refrigerator and freezer.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries if needed.
  • Inspect or replace the fire extinguisher.
