Health & Wellness in Communities is More Important Than Ever

Health and wellness are important to any community, but now more than ever. This encompasses all the features and amenities designed to promote well-being among multifamily residents, and it’s often considered a premium addition to the standard multifamily experience. However, in today’s world, richer health and wellness amenities are fast becoming the new standard.

There are many features that play into health and wellness, such as fitness, calmness, nourishment and community. The goal goes beyond individual health and extends to creating a sense of connectedness in spaces where people can interact with each other, form relationships and enjoy life.

The Future of Health & Wellness

A group of researchers and developers recently partnered with a national survey company to ask 3,000 homeowners and renters about their living preferences with the aim of discovering how lifestyle changes imposed by COVID-19 and quarantine have affected their needs. (source)

In terms of indoor upgrades, the survey found that over 50% of respondents are willing to pay more for germ-resistant countertops and flooring, upgraded technology and greater energy efficiency. People in multifamily communities were all willing to pay for touchless building entry.

In terms of outdoor spaces, respondents asked for wider trail paths to maintain social distancing, larger parks, multiple open-air pavilions, private patios and balconies, and on-site health and wellness centers for residents.

Multifamily community respondents asked for a disinfection drop zone for deliveries, as well as more touchless/voice-activated fixtures and features.

When it comes to community and amenity areas, survey respondents asked for limited access to gyms, with key-fob entry and appointment schedules to maintain safe occupancy numbers, as well as germ-resistant surfaces throughout these spaces.

COVID-19 won’t last forever, but it’s likely to have long-term, if not permanent, effects on how we build and organize communities to create a sense of safety, health and wellness.
