South Florida Landscaping Tips for Lawn & Gardens

It’s spring in South Florida, which feels an awful lot like summer, doesn’t it?  Whether you’re an experienced green thumb or just looking to add some life and color to your home, we have some tips you can use for your lawn and garden, starting today and for the next few months.

But first, if you’re looking for a new home in South Florida with a yard, Sierra Ranches is a gated, first-class community of just 79 estate homes inspired by Davie’s rich equestrian history, with a touch of modern for today’s lifestyle. One and two-level layouts on large lots offer everything you could want or need, with plenty of space for creating a home gym!

You should also take a look at Lennar’s Parkland Bay – a private lakefront community with new homes from 2,258 to more than 6,600 square feet. Each residence features an open layout, plenty of yard space, and the privacy and flexibility today’s families want!

May – It’s not a great time to plant most vegetables, but heat-resistant herbs such as basil, lemongrass and rosemary will do well in the South Florida summer. You should also look out for pests and diseases as the rains pick up. Prune dead and diseased growth and start prepping your lawn and garden for summer weather. Prune excess tree growth so that if a hurricane comes, there’s less chance for property damage.

June – This is a great time to topdress your soil with an inch or two of compost and then add a new layer of mulch. Mulch will both protect your soil and cut down on weeds. As compost breaks down, it improves your soil’s ability to hold nutrients. June is also a good month to plant palms because they love heat and rain. And if you love fall, you can actually plant your own pumpkins now and they’ll be ready for Halloween.

July – Clip dead flower blooms to keep the rest blooming longer, and if you don’t have grass – or don’t want the maintenance – it’s a good time to plant low-maintenance ground cover such as confederate jasmine or purple lantana. If you have a lawn with a sprinkler system, it’s a good time to invest in an override device. It will detect if your yard is moist enough and keep sprinklers from going off when they don’t need to.
