Moving to a new home is a very daunting and stressful task – even thinking about it creates stress. During the fall, many people choose to move with their families, out on their own, or downsize for retirement. Whether you’re moving across the street, across town, or across the country, follow these packing tips to ensure your move goes smoothly!
1.Make a Plan/Checklist
Packing takes a lot of time. Knowing the exact day you need to move is the key to creating a plan/checklist. Allocate enough time before the move to pack and have your end date in mind. This keeps you accountable and on track for a more successful move. In order to keep track of everything, write down what you’re packing and when. Doing this will help you plan out your packing time and be a good reference when unpacking later. Also, make a checklist of must-dos before your move, like contacting your cable and internet provider to cancel/transfer service or having your mail forwarded to your new address starting on a particular date.
2. Just Start Packing
Some people get so tied up planning their move that it actually slows down progress. Here’s a tip: just start packing! A good place to start is with items you don’t use every day, such as out-of-season clothes, keepsakes, and decor. After this, move on to the kitchen and pack seldom-used dishes, countertop appliances and kitchen tools, and use small- to medium-sized boxes for heavy items. Don’t forget to write the room name and contents on the outside of every box.
3. Clean Out The Closets
While packing the wardrobe, you’ll notice clothes, shoes, or accessories you haven’t recently worn. Don’t pack them! This is a great time to sift through old clothes and purge your closet. When packing hanging clothes in wardrobe boxes, place shoes at the bottom to save space. You can also use medium-sized boxes to pack folded clothes and group like items together to make unpacking easier. Keep clothing you use often in a suitcase or duffle bag for easy access, like pajamas, so that you can use them right before and after your move.
4. For a Quicker and Easier Move…
Hire movers and packers while making sure to keep valuable jewelry, computers, and family heirlooms with you during the move to ensure they’re safe and undamaged. Movers and packers aren’t inexpensive, but if you’ve ever moved yourself – especially as an adult with years of accrued belongings – you might consider the extra help an investment, not an expense. It can be well worth the cost. It’s so easy to become overwhelmed when packing for a move, but if you stay organized, label everything and plan it out, moving can actually be exciting!
