Tips on hosting a dinner party

Whether you are a first time home buyer or have had some experience in the game, hosting a dinner party can still be demanding. Although this task may come with its challenges, it does result in memories built inside your Lennar Home. Hosting a dinner party is a casual yet elegant way to show your creativity amongst friends and family. It acts as an outlet to show warmth and hospitality to your new neighbors whom can potentially become new friends.

From the planning to the cleaning up, there are many tips as to how hosting a dinner party can be smooth sailing. It is best to start off as a small group, inviting maybe two to three couples in addition to yourself. This is your moment to make the dinner special as you are able to make more connections with your guests than a room full of hungry people. Fit as many as your dining room table comfortably sits.

  • Idea: In warm weather you can entertain outside instead. If you don’t have the right furniture, consider buying a multipurpose table from Ikea.

While decorating, keep in mind to have pieces that will not cover your guests as you talk amongst each other. This can result in shutting the conversation short or even removing your beautiful décor out of the table. Also keep in mind that you want to keep everything neat and easy to clean up, therefore using linens will be a lifesaver.

Linens: White is a safe color. If you have a white large tablecloth, great! Be sure it’s ironed and check for spots. Placemats can substitute, especially if you have an attractive wood table.

  • Idea: Borrow if you don’t own. Crate and Barrel has outlet stores around the country. TJMaxx/Marshalls/Homegoods are also great for heavily discounted linens.

When it comes to drinks, you want to keep it simple with a selection of wines and beers. Maybe a sangria to liven up your cocktail table as it can be a highly decorative piece.

Drinks: Limiting the selection to wine, beer and water is fine. Have soft drinks around for non-drinkers. Maybe even some decaf coffee for those whom want to end the night after their dinner.

  • Idea: Flavored waters are popular. Buy wine and beer with recognizable brand names unless you are an expert in the field.

Having music run through the night will give the sense of comfort to avoid any awkward silences. Picking a selection of recognizable, fun music will result in some good dancing and it can break the ice if you are meeting new neighbors. Nonetheless, as long as you enjoy your company and are proud of what you presented, you will have successfully hosted a dinner party that you should be proud of.
