While there may not be snow on the ground or even a chill in the air, that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate the Winter season with your kids! From fantastical animal creations to snowy winter scenes and everything in between, we’ve put together a fun list of DIY crafts for your kids to explore at home.
Birch Tree Painting
This tape resist craft is one your kids can really get their hands on without much effort or mess! To get started, simply set up a piece of cardstock or watercolor paper on your dining room table and tape it down creating a border at the edge. Next, have your kids tear pieces of tape to form their preferred tree shapes on the piece of paper. Depending on what you have on hand, fill in the background of the paper with markers, watercolors, food coloring, or whatever your preference. After the background has dried comes the satisfying step of tearing off the tape to reveal your white birch tree design!
Polar Bear Masks
Cute and playful, this simple craft mask is perfect for children of all ages! The first step is to grab a handful of paper plates from your kitchen and cut two holes for the polar bear’s eyes. For the snout, you can use any small plastic cup you may have on hand, such as an empty yogurt container. If your container is not white, you can paint it with acrylic paint, and also use this same container to trace shapes for the bear’s ears onto a sheet of craft paper. Next, use craft glue to adhere crumpled pieces of white tissue paper to the plate to look like fur, covering everywhere except for where the snout will go. Glue down the ears and snout, drawing a mouth onto the snout with permanent marker, and gluing a black pom to the snout for the nose. Finally, punch two small holes in the sides of the plate and attach a piece of string or yarn, and your kids’ mask is ready for playtime!
Homemade Snow Globes
A childhood favorite of many parents, this creative kids craft is a winter classic! First have your child pick out a small plastic figurine or Legos that they are willing to part with in order to make their snow globe. Next, grab a mason jar from your pantry and place some glue on the inside of the lid, adhering your kid’s plastic toy to the lid. You will then fill the jar with cold water, add a teaspoon or two of glitter, and stir. The next step is to add a few drops of glycerin and then screw the lid back on tightly, or even seal it shut with glue if you’re concerned about your child opening it. Flip the jar over, shake it up, and watch your glitter ‘snow’ in your homemade snow globe creation!
