House to home

5 Things Homeowners Want in Lighting Products

Often taken for granted, lighting is an integral feature of new homes. From their design esthetic to energy efficient properties, the attributes of lighting in new homes can far surpass used homes. In a new Builder Online article, Lauren Shanesy highlights the findings of a recent consumer lighting preferences survey.

What lighting features are most important in your new home? Let us know in the comments below!

Here, Legrand breaks down the results into five key preferences that are important to homeowners when choosing lighting products:

1. Energy use and sustainability are key preferences.

The majority of homeowners (91%) say that reducing energy use at home is important. However, about 1 in 5 Americans overall (21%) do not know that installing lighting controls can help reduce energy use.

2. Technology is on the rise, and so is smart-home inspired design.

Along with the growing presence of tech-focused products, appliances, and solutions that simplify day-to-day living, interest surrounding smart home features for lighting is high. Survey findings identified lighting as a priority smart home feature, with two thirds of Americans (67%) reporting that if they were creating a smart home, they would want to be able to control lighting via an app or online.

3. Safety is a major consideration, especially for parents.

Another key consideration for Americans is safety, particularly as it pertains to childproofing the home. Only about one quarter of Americans (28%) and only about one third of parents with a child under the age of 18 (35%) know that tamper-resistant outlets eliminate the need to child-proof electrical sockets.

4. Homeowners care about great design.

Builder-grade wall plates, switches, dimmers, and outlets are standard in most homes, yet many homeowners may wish for sleeker designs. The majority of homeowners (82%) believe there are more stylish lighting control options out there than what is pre-installed in their home.

5. Homeowners are looking for budget-friendly offerings.

Roughly half of homeowners (47%) admitted that making home improvements is not a priority for them due to how much it cost. Price seems to also be a prominent consideration for those homeowners who may be looking into smart home features. Seventy-four percent of homeowners believe that upgrading a home to be a smart home would be too expensive.
