Kelly Annala is an Interior Designer here at Lennar who helps design and style model homes across our West Coast communities. We interviewed her recently to get her insight on a recent new model home in San Diego, as well as learning a bit more about her background in the industry. Read all about her design for our Residence 2 model home in San Marcos’ Skylark community.
Did the location of this model home influence your design choices?
“Definitely! Being in San Marcos, the homes are within a 30-minute drive to the beach and since they’re up on a hill, you could see the ocean on a clear day! This model home, Residence 2, was especially influenced by its proximity to the coast.”
How would you describe the style of this model home, as well as the color schemes?
“This home feels very light and bright. The coastal vibe is reflected in the chosen color scheme, which features sky blue and terra cotta.”
The Kitchen
Featuring a timeless design with ample storage space, brand-new stainless-steel appliances and a large central island, this space is perfect for both cooking and entertaining with friends and family.
“One of my current favorite design trends is scallop-shaped features. I love the scalloped pendants, which add charm to the space. I kept the features light in this space and brought in warmth through the wood barstools and accessories. “
The Dining Area
Enjoy everyday meals, hosting dinner parties or entertaining for the holidays in this bright and airy dining room.
“I used light to medium toned woods, rattan and gold accents to tie the space together with the rest of the home. I brought in color through the gorgeous rug and accessories – the space is inviting and set up for entertaining.”
The Great Room
This open-concept space is ideally located in-between the kitchen and dining room. The natural light from all the windows and a stylish fireplace creates a warm and welcoming space.
“I think this layout worked great for this open floorplan, where we really wanted to maximize seating while keeping it very open to the dining area. I love the white brick that spanned from the dining room to great room – it added the perfect amount of subtle texture.”
The Owner’s Suite
Peacefully unwind in this spacious second-floor owner’s suite, complete with a walk-in closet and luxurious en-suite bathroom.
“This Owner’s Suite is such a great size – we were able to put very large furniture in there and it fit nicely. I loved the beaded chandelier, light blue bedding and light wood finishes, it gave the space a relaxed, coastal feel.”
The Loft
This bonus space is a perfect area to comfortably relax and have a game night, watch movies or curl up with a good book.
“I think the loft turned out great! We really tried to make the most of the space with the U-shaped sectional. This room is cozy yet functional – it’s hard not to imagine family movie nights in there!”
What was the best part of working on this model home and seeing the space come to life?
“It is always exciting to see all your hard work come to fruition, and it’s fun to see everything come to life. Especially when, like in this instance, the homes turned out even better than you expected.”
This model home, Residence 2, is located in the Skylark community in San Marcos.

Why do you love interior design?
“I was immediately drawn to design as a creative outlet. I love using it as a form of self-expression to create a space that reflects my personal style, but I also enjoy challenging myself to design outside my comfort zone. I love how a space can change a way someone feels or experiences something.”
Where do you look for inspiration?
“I am constantly inspired by and in awe of nature. When designing a space, I love to use as many natural materials and plants as possible to help bring the outdoors inside and create an inviting, calming space.”
Current favorite design trend?
“As mentioned above: scalloped objects – a pleated empire shade on a lamp, a scalloped edge on furniture, a scalloped rim ceramic bowl or a fluted glass pendant!”
Fun fact about yourself?
“I love to scuba dive and am obsessed with all things involving the ocean!”
