Celebrate National Good Neighbor Day on September 28th

Did you know that National Good Neighbor Day is September 28th?

In 1978, United States President Jimmy Carter issued Proclamation 4601:

“As our Nation struggles to build friendship among the peoples of this world, we are mindful that the noblest human concern is concern for others. Understanding, love and respect build cohesive families and communities. The same bonds cement our Nation and the nations of the world. For most of us, this sense of community is nurtured and expressed in our neighborhoods where we give each other an opportunity to share and feel part of a larger family…I call upon the people of the United States and interested groups and organizations to observe such day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.” (source)

Whether you’re close friends with your neighbors, or you’ve never even introduced yourself, this is the perfect time to show your neighbors that you care!

Looking for ways to go above and beyond for your neighbors on #GoodNeighborDay? Check out our list of ideas below.

Lend a helping hand

Perhaps you live next door to an elderly couple, a new mom, or a busy family. Offer your services and time to show that you care. Depending on their needs, offer to drive to the store for groceries, or help them with any yard work that needs to be done.

Leave a note

This is a great time to practice your penmanship and the art of letter-writing. Grab some stationary or note cards and write a short note to say hello. Drop off your letters to your neighbors on their doorsteps or mailbox, and brighten their day!

Get together

Have a fun social-distanced happy hour or do a pot-luck with the neighborhood in your backyard or community center. You can also host a picnic in a park with spaced out blankets or a game night…the possibilities are endless!

Spread joy

You know what they say – sharing is caring. Have a baking day at home and bring cookies over to your neighbors. If you have a garden, share some of your bounty or bring a bouquet of fresh flowers.

Remember that it’s the thought that counts! Even if you just simply say hello or spark a conversation with your neighbor, celebrate National Good Neighbor Day on September 28th.
