Earth Day 2023: Green Living Habits for your Home

It’s the small things that make the biggest difference, right? In honor of Earth Day on April 22nd, make a commitment to be more sustainable and eco-friendly in the one place you spend most of your time – your home. A good start is making small changes in your everyday life that can contribute to reducing carbon emissions and may even help lower your utility bills. You win, the earth wins and your wallet wins – it’s the ultimate solution. Here are a few small steps you can take to make a HUGE impact:

1. Maintenance

When’s the last time you looked at your home closely? As homes age, it’s easy to overlook minor upkeep that can save you and the planet big in the long run. Tighten up leaky faucets, unplug electronics you’re not actively using and remember to turn the lights off every time you leave a room. Converting light bulbs from traditional to LED can significantly reduce energy costs and elevate your home’s aesthetic. Luckily, every new Lennar home is equipped with ENERGY STAR® rated appliances so you’re already one step ahead.

2. Landscaping

When it comes to tending to your yard, keeping things green and lush is not always an easy chore. If you live in a warmer climate that sees less rain, consider these grass alternatives to significantly reduce utility costs and water usage. Ensure to plant climate-friendly vegetation and consider researching perennials and plants native to your region to help promote pollination.

3. Reuse, recycle, upcycle

What’s old can be made new again, and that applies to many things you might have written off as junk around your home. Turn old mason jars into decorative lanterns, ladders that have seen better days can be revamped into rustic bookcases and so much more. Check out this list for some upcycling inspiration.

4. Give your HVAC a rest or consider smart appliances

Turn off the thermostat and open up windows and doors for some fresh clean air. Upgrade your thermostat to a smart reader that will help you to stay accountable and reduce energy costs.

5. Consider a new Lennar home

As you’re looking around your home, you may realize that it may be time to upgrade your surroundings for a fresh space. Whether you need more room, flexible living areas or want that kitchen you’ve been dreaming of, Lennar offers beautiful communities and a variety of floorplans for every lifestyle.
