House to home

Ideas for building your own outdoor home theater

With the latest outdoor trends and landscaping, backyards have slowly become an extension of our homes. From outdoor kitchens to fancy water features, the sky is the limit when it comes to amenities for your backyard space.

Outdoor home theaters have recently become the newest trend for outdoor living spaces, bringing outdoor entertainment to a whole new level.  With so many different approaches to creating an outdoor theatre, it’s easy to customize it any way you wish.

Features you may consider for your outdoor home theatre:

Projector/Projector Screen: There are many different routes you can go when creating your home theatre, but the most popular seems to be using a projector to display the movies.  Projectors can cost anywhere from $80 to $2,000 depending on the quality you are looking for and need. Projector screens are on the lower end, ranging from $60 to $200. If you’re looking to stay on a low budget, you can even improvise with a white bed sheet or use the exterior of your home!

Audio: To get the whole effect of a movie theatre, the audio is an important aspect of your home theater. With other outdoor sounds and distractions, an audio system will be a perfect way to tune out the sounds around you. If you’re looking to utilize your home theater frequently, your best option might be a set of outdoor speakers that can be kept outside. If your home theater is meant to be a temporary backyard feature, portable Bluetooth speakers might be your best option, allowing you to bring them in and out as you wish. While you may be tuning out the sounds, don’t forget to be mindful of your neighbors during your movie night.

Lighting: Lightning is optional when it comes to your outdoor home theater space. Depending on the mood you’re going for you can invest in lighting to surround your home theater, creating the perfect movie theater ambiance for you and your guests. You can even use Tiki torches or candles to help maintain the outdoor feel, while also fighting off any unwanted insects in your backyard.

Seating arrangement: When all is said and done with the audio and visual, you’ll need a comfortable place to sit back and relax with family and friends. You can opt for budget-friendly seating by using lawn chairs or simply grab a handful of blankets and pillows from your home. If your budget allows, consider purchasing outdoor furniture pieces which not only provide a comfy space to lounge, but allow for multiple uses beyond just your outdoor home theater.

Snacks: No movie is complete without a bucket of popcorn (or your movie snacking preference). In no time you can sit back and relax with a movie marathon in the convenience of your own backyard!
