House to home

Put the “home” in your home office

So many people are working from home these days or designating a space for paying bills and organizing life. Fortunately, home offices are becoming more of an extension of a well-decorated, personalized home and less of a stark room with only a desk and filing cabinets.

Luckily, your home office doesn’t have to be the traditional office anymore. This space can be functional and stylish. Consider these tips when arranging and decorating your home office in a way that will make you love your work from home:

Functional, yet fun

  • Instead of a traditional dark wood desk with drawers on either side, try a brightly painted table or even a clear acrylic desk. (A clear desk can help make a tight space look larger.)
  • Files can be stored in cabinets or drawers underneath another piece of furniture such as a buffet or credenza, reducing clutter.
  • You need doors for privacy, so use them to add some character to the space. Distressed wood barn doors that slide on a track are popular. You could also think about a glass door if the office space is small or if you feel a bit claustrophobic when the door’s closed.

Comfort

  • An area rug on wood floors or tile makes the office cozier. It also minimizes echo when you’re on a conference call.
  • Use an upholstered slipper chair at your desk or in your workspace, to give you a break from sitting at your desk
  • Set up a sitting area if space permits.

Lighting

  • Don’t skimp on lighting if you don’t have enough natural light. LED bulbs offer a “cleaner” light that allows your paperwork to be seen more clearly, reducing strain on the eyes.

Personal touches

  • Hang up framed awards and diplomas, for sure, but also display photographs and art that make you happy.
  • Plants help make you feel like you aren’t stuck inside. They give you a little of the outdoor elements and are good for your mind and body. Succulents are easy to care for and come in a wide array of varieties and containers.
