For the Fourth of July, a family picnic around the resort-style pool or a party with neighbors at one of your Lennar community’s parks or playgrounds is as American as apple pie.
In that spirit, the Lennar family offers super-easy recipe ideas for the holiday. They’re not only fun to make, they also let you exercise your freedom to adjust the ingredients any way you like. Better yet, they really are red (hot dogs), white (cole slaw), and blue (berry dessert).
RED: Resident Dogs’ Sizzler Dawg
The Sizzler classes up the all-American grilled hotdog, bringing the steakhouse to the bun.
Cut a pint of cherry or grape tomatoes long ways. Toss in a little olive oil, a couple of cloves of crushed garlic, a few sprigs of thyme and roast at 375 degrees for about 15 minutes, stirring halfway through cook time. While the tomatoes are roasting, sauté sliced white onions with a little salt and pepper over medium-high heat.
Top your grilled hotdog and toasted bun with some roasted tomatoes, grilled onions, blue cheese crumbles, a drizzle of your favorite steak sauce and a sprinkle of French’s® crispy fried onions for some added crunch.
WHITE: Brenda’s Six-Week Slaw
- One large head cabbage, grated
- 2 carrots, grated
- ½ tsp. salt
- 3 oz vinegar
- ¼ tsp celery seed
- ¾ cup sugar
- 3 oz oil
- 1½ tsp mustard seed
Mix cabbage and carrots. Boil remaining ingredients. After the liquid cools a bit, pour over veggies. Cover and refrigerate. Let set 12 hours before serving. Keeps up to six weeks, but this slaw won’t last past the evening’s fireworks.
Blue: Kathy’s Easy-As-Pie Berry Bomb
Flour both sides of two Pillsbury® pie crusts, or make your own flaky dough, if you prefer. Line a CorningWare® dish with one crust, saving the other crust for the top.
In a mixing bowl, stir frozen or fresh berries (or peaches, or both) with 6 to 10 tablespoons of sugar, a tablespoon or two of flour and a dash of nutmeg. Stir until fruit “juices” and thickens a little with the flour.
Make sure your bottom crust hangs over the edge of the casserole dish. Fill with the fruit mixture. Top the dish with the second crust. Pinch together and use a fork to press the crust(s) onto the edge of the casserole.
Use a paring knife to cut a heart-shaped slice into the top crust, along with a few extra little cuts so steam can escape.
Bake at 350 for at least 30 to 45 minutes or until the crust is browned or thick juice begins oozing from the top; it might be a good idea put a piece of foil on the bottom of your oven to catch any spillover.
Thank you for being part of our Lennar family of homes and communities from sea to shining sea. Happy Fourth, America!
