Stay safe and cool with these 4 pool safety tips

Summer is just around the corner and with rising temps, many of us will be lounging near the pool to quell the scorching heat. While fencing and a watchful eye are helpful in keeping your loved ones safe, here are a few tips to keep in mind to ensure a happy and responsible pool day.

Designate a pool “lifeguard”

With so many distractions at play, the pool can be a bit scary for a parent to navigate. Help alleviate possible drowning by placing an adult in the pool at all times. Always supervise your children and have an adult stay within range to guarantee quick assistance if a child begins to struggle in the water.

Keep emergency equipment nearby

You should have at least 2 fully equipped first aid kits close by and a pull hook for moments when someone or something is unable to be easily reached. Having a reliable phone on hand is also suggested if an emergency call needs to be placed.

Know CPR

Learning CPR is perhaps one of the most important things a person can do. By knowing this lifesaving skill, you gain the opportunity of providing critical aid to potential drowning victims. Community classes are often offered at no-cost so be sure to check out your local centers.

Don’t forget about your pets

Fencing your pool not only keeps your little ones safe, but it also provides extra security for your fur friends as well. If your pet likes to take a dip once in a while, it’s a good idea to invest in a threshold alarm that alerts you if your pool gate stays open for more than a few seconds. This is useful if your pet tends to stay in the backyard for a duration of time. Teaching your pet to use the appropriate enter/exist steps is another great tip as it guarantees their safety in going in and out of the water.

Take these tips into consideration and enjoy a hot and healthy summer!
