The surprising perks of owning a home vs. renting an apartment

Have you ever had those “Well, if I had my own home…” moments while renting an apartment? While they may not be huge factors that sway someone into a buying a home, there are quite a few perks that you might take for granted when owning a home or simply wish you had while renting. Check out these 5 “unusual” perks of owning a home vs. renting an apartment below!

You won’t get charged for owning a pet

Owning a home means that you can own the pet of your choice without any additional monthly fees or deposits. No matter if you have one pet or three, you won’t have to worry about an additional charge per pet.

While an apartment does allow you to own a variety of breeds, most will charge you pet rent each month along with a deposit for insurance purposes. Our furry friends already have their own expenses as it is, so an additional monthly fee for just owning a pet can quickly add up!

You are free to paint the interior of your home any color

If you’re looking to add a pop of color to your master bedroom or bathroom, it’s not a task that most homeowners think twice about before doing. Owning a home means you have free reign over the décor and paint color that you choose inside your home.

While it is true that you can paint the walls at most apartments, it’s not necessarily as convenient as if you were to own your own home. Most apartment properties require you to paint the walls back to their original colors when your lease is up. This requires extra time, effort, and money to simply add a pop of color in your home.

You will always have a parking spot close by

A definite perk of owning a home is having a garage or driveway to park your car. On late nights or days you’re running errands such as groceries, it’s convenient and efficient knowing your car is just steps away from your front door.

With apartment living, it can be more common to have difficulty finding a parking spot if you aren’t assigned a specific spot.

You can choose your own providers

Owning a home gives you more freedom when it comes to choosing your utility and cable providers. For some, this can save families a lot of money by choosing a provider that caters to their financial needs as well as providing the service that suits them best.

When renting, you may have to choose from the providers that they partner with or include on their property. For some, this might not be an issue, but is still a perk that most of us may take for granted when owning a home.

You can be as loud as you want (for the most part)

Owning a home can offer more privacy and sound barriers that renting an apartment might not permit. If you are respecting your neighbors at the right hours of the day, you shouldn’t have to worry too much on the sound level inside or outside of your home.

A home of your own can mean more freedom and not having to be so conscious about the small things, such as worrying about the volume of the television or the noise level of your guests.
