From Deep Ellum, whose name derives from an early African American dialect’s pronunciation of Elm Street, to some of the recognized names in music, such as Ray Charles and Robert Johnson, the Metroplex celebrates a leap-year’s worth of Black History Month.
Throughout DFW, celebrations pay tribute to African American contributions and accomplishments that stretched from north Texas to the rest of the world. It is here that:
- Robert Johnson recorded some of his most memorable blues tunes and Ray Charles lived before he ascended to immortality;
- Freed slaves founded such places as Joppa, also known as Joppee and Bear Creek freedman’s town in Irving, now one of the most desirable communities around;
- Landmarks still stand, including the Grand Temple of the Knights of Pythias, now the Union Bankers Trust Building, designed by William Sydney Pittman, the state’s first black architect and son-in-law of Booker T. Washington.
