Looking for free fun in Austin this weekend? Mark your calendar’s for Austin’s famous Pecan Street Festival this Saturday and Sunday May 7th and 8th. The Pecan Street Festival is one of the oldest and most unique festivals featuring over 300 local and national artists and vendors showcasing their talents and works of art. Artists offer original handcrafted creations in a variety of mediums such as metal, wood, fiber, clay, leather and stone.
The festival is held twice a year during the first weekend in May and the last weekend in September. Organized by the Pecan Street Association, the festival helps support the Austin community by donating its proceeds towards the preservation of the historic 6th Street District in downtown Austin. Beneficiaries include Mobile Loaves and Fishes, Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, Austin Community Foundation, Cancer Connection, Habitat for Humanity, Austin Police and Fire departments, Texas Green Network Austin Parks and Recreation and many others. Did you know, Austin’s north-south streets were named after Texas rivers and east-west streets were originally named after trees? Though the east-west streets were later renamed with numbers, the festival still honors the original Pecan Street Name for 6th street.
Find old and new merge in this historic melting pot of art and culture! Food, Fun, Art and Entertainment converge here! The festival will feature three stages located on Trinity, Neches and Red River streets with live music each night and 30 food vendors located throughout the festival will offer sweet, savory, indulgent and classic and healthy options for all who attend. From funnel cakes and crepes to smoothies and lemonade, you’re sure to find something to satisfy all of your cravings! Not to mention tons of kid-friendly activities including fun rides, interactive workshops, face-painting, a petting zoo and street magicians. You don’t want to miss out! The Pecan Street Festival takes place in the Sixth Street Historic District between Brazos Street and Interstate 35.
